Waking Silent and Resigned

I can’t imagine anyone singing opera in Star Wars, but just like I heard Reflections from Mulan in my head every time I thought about Rey’s mirror scene, I hear Think of Me from the Phantom of the Opera when I imagine Rey and Ben waking up after splitting the sabre. A lot of the lyrics could apply, but the part that triggered this correlation in my mind is (1:44):

Think of me, think of me waking silent and resigned
Imagine me trying too hard to put you from my mind

All I Ask of You is also one I apply to Reylo. Quite fanciful, but applicable nevertheless, at least in my opinion. Interestingly, I would give Raoul’s confident verses to Rey and Christine’s insecure parts to Ben.

  1. It’s been so long since I’ve seen/watched/listened to Phantom I didn’t even think of these parallels. They do fit quite well.

Today my first spawn was watching the animated Beauty and the Beast (she’s 3 and has recently become very interested in the Disney classics.) I know there are a lot of comparisons between a Reylo and B&TB which have been covered online, but has anyone talked about Belle’s favorite book, which features a prince in disguise? Because when she sings: “Here’s where she meets Prince Charming, but she won’t discover that it’s him ‘til chapter 3.” —All I could think about was Reylo. Because hopefully the third installment of this trilogy will be the chapter in which our favorite broody, beautiful prince throws off his “disguise” (Kylo Ren) and our heroine finally recognizes him for what he truly is (her destiny.)

Anyway. That was my random Star Wars thought for the day and I wanted to leave it here. Disney has been really open about how The Lion King influenced Black Panther, and JJ’s TFA commentary was heavy on the fairytale stuff, so maybe they’re not-so-subtly pulling from B&TB for this aspect of the sequel trilogy.

    • I THINK THE EXACT SAME thing every time I hear that song! It tickles me pink to think that they might be deliberately pulling from B&tB because that’s hands-down my favorite Disney animation. As to how many of the parallels are deliberate, I suppose it depends on one’s philosophy regarding coincidences and happy accidents. 😉
