Snoke’s Masterpiece

I remember this passage in the TFA novel really got my attention: [Snoke:] “I have never had a student with such promise—before you.” Ren straightened. “It is your teachings that make me strong, Supreme Leader.” Snoke demurred. “It is far more than that. It is where you are from. What you are made of. The dark side—and the light. The finest sculptor cannot fashion a masterpiece from poor materials. He must have something pure, something strong, something unbreakable, with which …

Mighty

Also, I noticed a parallel I hadn’t yet: Snoke at the beginning of the movie, mockingly: “The mighty Kylo Ren.” Luke during his second lesson with Rey: “For many years, there was balance–and then I saw…Ben. My nephew. With that mighty Skywalker blood.” Probably a coincidence (is anything in this movie a coincidence?), but still interesting.

Flashback R2D2

As I study Luke’s second lesson, I find myself wondering: Why was R2D2 just hanging out, watching the temple burn? I think he’s watching it; he seems to turn and look at Luke as the man approaches from behind the droid. The quote, “Some people just like to watch the world burn,” comes to mind. (Not sure where that originated, can only think of Alfred’s line in The Dark Knight.) But seriously, did R2D2 know Luke went to confront Ben? …

Misleading the Troops

Another juicy morsel from the TFA novel: Halting, Ren slowly scanned his surroundings. Even though they knew what he was doing, the troopers still marveled at the display. After a long moment of deliberation, he motioned them toward the upper levels. “They’re here. Find them. Up there.” The squad immediately went into action, moving off rapidly in the direction he had indicated. Once they were out of sight, Ren turned slowly—and headed downward. Ben deliberately steered the troops in the …

Interesting Tidbits

As I continue to study Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, I’ve come across interesting tidbits of information that make me rethink what I thought I knew. For instance, in the visual dictionary for TFA, there’s a segment that reads: “The Supreme Leader believes Ren to be the ideal embodiment of the Force, a focal point of both light and dark side ability.” Furthermore, on Ben’s page on Wookiepedia (they also cited the TFA dictionary): “…Ben was eventually, in his late teens, targeted …

Interview with Christopher Rice (Bone Music)

Article and Interview by Elise Cooper Bone Music’s story by Christopher Rice is not a classical melody, but more like hard rock. The scenes are riveting and realistic enough that there is an element of believability, alternating between a thriller and the fringes of science fiction. This consuming read has the heroine trying to overcome her tragic past by rebuilding her life and overcoming her trust issues. The intensity begins from page one when a husband and wife team of …

Thrown into Tree

There’s one part of the TFA movie that makes me cringe every time–when Ren throws Rey into a tree in the forest on Starkiller Base. A branch cracks sharply on impact, and every time I imagine it’s her spine. It horrifies me–probably supposed to. We get that weird connection between them, all those sexual tension vibes, then bam, he throws her like a ragdoll as if he doesn’t care if he hurts her as long as he can take her …

Good Intentions

I’m reading the visual dictionary for The Last Jedi and choked when I read this: “Skywalker’s first student was to be his sister, Leia. However, she ultimately decided that the best path for her to serve the galaxy left no room for the extended isolation of Jedi training. As Leia concentrated on her new family and senatorial politics, Luke began his travels…” She had good intentions, anyway.

Kylo’s a Smart Cookie

This is a comment from the Just You page, but I wanted to share it here, too, because it’s interesting to think about. Posted by Anita: I’m loving this. And while I realise it’s fanfic and not precisely as in the movies, I’d like to share a thought. I think Kylo is smarter than most people give him credit for. And I think that (up until Snoke’s death) he’s had to be extremely careful, because otherwise Snoke would have offed …

Lines from TFA Novel

These aren’t necessarily theories, but I feel like these parts of the TFA novel (© Alan Dean Foster and LucasFilm) don’t get talked about enough. Yes, I know the movies trump the books in the canon food chain, but the books are still canon, so I will continue to obsess over them. In the novel’s interrogation scene: “Where are the others? The ones who were fighting with me?” He sniffed disdainfully. “You mean the traitors, murderers, and thieves you call …
